Continuing the discussion from Monday as we wrap up the focus on mentorship in the momth of September, I wanted to address one of the most important aspect of a mentor - mentee relationship - values. In my opinion, values are the guiding principles, beliefs, and standards that shape how a person thinks, makes decisions, and lives their life. They act as an internal compass that influences priorities, behaviors, and long-term goals.
🔎 Self-Check Guide for a Mentee
1. Clarify Your Own Values
-
What matters most to me in my growth (e.g., integrity, accountability, curiosity, balance)?
-
Am I clear on the kind of person and professional I want to become?
2. Assess Alignment with My Mentor
-
Does my mentor respect my goals, even if they differ from theirs?
-
Do I feel safe sharing my challenges and mistakes?
-
Does my mentor’s behavior reflect values I admire and want to emulate?
3. Look for Supportive Behaviors
-
Do they encourage me to take ownership of my journey?
-
Do they hold me accountable in a constructive way?
-
Do they celebrate effort, not just outcomes?
4. Reflect on the Relationship’s Impact
-
Am I becoming more confident in my decisions?
-
Do I feel motivated and inspired after our conversations?
-
Is this relationship helping me live more fully by my values?
5. Red Flags to Notice
-
Do I feel pressured to act against my principles?
-
Am I hesitant to be honest with my mentor?
-
Do I feel undervalued or dismissed in the relationship?
👉 Use this as a periodic reflection tool (monthly or quarterly) to make sure your mentorship continues to align with your values and supports your growth.
